How long should a short-form clip be?

In this dataset the 60–89 second band scored highest (8.55 average), and scores rose steadily with length from 20 seconds upward. The common advice to keep clips under 30 seconds did not hold — those clips scored lowest of any band. A clip should run as long as its payoff takes, which for most podcast and interview moments is 45–90 seconds.

Why do very short clips score badly?

The most common pattern we see in low-scoring short clips is a hook with no payoff — a strong opening line cut before the point lands. Under 20 seconds there is often only room for the setup. The exception is a genuinely self-contained joke or one-liner.

Is this based on real view counts?

No, and that matters. These are scores from our own clip-selection model, which rates each candidate segment 1–10 on hook strength, self-containment and payoff. It reflects what the model rewards, not measured platform performance. We say so plainly rather than implying we tracked views we did not track.
